Hooping

13 Jul

If you didn’t know me, you wouldn’t know that hula hooping has been a big part of my life for the past year and a half or so. And, if you’ve never seen hoop dancing before, you would probably think it’s a weird hobby to have.

Check out this story on the Miami Desk for more info about hooping.

I started hula-hooping because my best friend from back home started and once I saw the beautiful flowing moves you could make with this child’s toy, I was determined to learn. I’ve never been a dancer so I don’t consider myself graceful by any means, but the object gives me confidence.

(above is one of my most recent videos from January, I use them mainly to document myself and see what I can do to improve)

I started watching YouTube tutorials and attending meetups with other “hoopers” to learn tricks and “flow.” Eventually I gained the experience to teach others, and have gotten other girls into the trend. And, as an athlete who is very concerned with her fitness, the hula hoop can provide a full body workout.

Anyways, I won’t get into too much detail just yet, but I have a rehearsal tomorrow for a performance that will be paying a month’s rent in grad school. Coming from a waitress/freelance reporter who can barely make ends meet, this is a miracle. Who knew a mere circle handmade out of PVC piping and tape would help me out so much?

Stay tuned for blogs about the performance!
